Last Champ with Fewer than 10 career wins?

Assuming Keselowski wins the championship next week (and not the race) he will have only 9 career wins at the time of his championship. Does anyone know who the last champion with fewer than 10 wins was? I thought it was Kurt Busch, but I checked and he had 11 after the 2004 season.

Seems we may have to go pretty far back...

Matt Kenseth had 7 career wins when he won the championship in 2003, but that included a series-high 5 wins in 2002.

Jeff Gordon had 9 when he won in 1995, but that was just his 3rd full season in Cup. Coincidentally, Keselowski's on the verge of winning the championship in his 3rd season and with 9 career wins, although his first win came in a partial schedule in 2009.

Alan Kulwicki had 5 wins when he won in 1992. In his tragically-shortened career (and life), Kulwicki had 5 wins in 207 career starts.

Dale Earnhardt had 6 wins when he won the championship in just his 2nd full season back in 1980.

And to cap things off for the modern era, Benny Parsons had just 2 wins when he won the championship in 1973. He'd go on to win 18 races from 1975-1981 and his last win was in 1984.

Thanks, I'd forgotten how early Kenseth won his Championship. I did go back and find Gordon after posting this, but missed Matt entirely...

Terry LaBonte had 4 career wins when he won his Winston Cup title in 1984. He had 2 wins in 1984. 2 wins prior to 1984.

    Wow, that's a neat parallel.

It'll be interesting to see how Penske getting in bed with Roush affects Brad's performance.

I wonder if that means all the fans will boo Brad for "winning too much" (and I snicker while saying that laughable phrase) like they did for Gordon if he has as much success.

    Hello ladies and gentlemen,

I am sure you are well aware that the FOX network which owns a controlling interest in the SPEED Channel has signaled that it will be converting SPEED into use for more mainstream stick and ball sports coverage and away from motor sports. Formula 1 will now be on NBC Sports Network for the 2013 season and beyond and your guess is as good as mine how much air time FOX will give to NASCAR, GrandAm, WOO, LeMans, Aussie V8s, etc once the change over is completed.

This means the SPEED.com website is basically a dead man walking. As time goes on there will be less and less motor sports reporting and news available and by default participation in the forums will fall off dramatically. It appears our long love/hate relationship with these boards has run its course.

Several of the long term posters at SPEED.com have come together and looked at our options. NBC Sports’ message boards are a joke so we decided instead of being at their mercy we would establish an independent forum to continue where the SPEED boards left off.

We have named it Motorsports Mayhem.

We have done this at no personal gain for ourselves. No one is making a dime off this site. All the revenue from the ads you will see is going to the forum hosting company Zetaboards.

The Moderation of the boards will be very hands off. If you and a few other posters want to go on debating a subject for pages on end it will be allow. The only rule is no direct personal attacks. You may post any facts, figures and expert opinions to support your side of the debate and/or discredit the opposition but no personal attacks will be tolerated. Keep it professional and everyone will be happy.

Swearing is allowed but we ask you to be prudent in its use. A single swear used for humorous and witty effect is enjoyed by all, but relentless and continued use of such words becomes boring, tiresome and off putting to others. One swear, per poster, per thread, is a good base line. Swearing directly at another poster as an insult will result in an instant ban.

Every morning key people involved will be starting threads on the big news stories of the day. Please feel free to add threads for news that is missed. That is it, please come join us. Just hit the “register” tab at the top left of the main page and you are good to go. Hope to see you there.
